Arrival at the Hospital

When you first arrive at ACCESS, your pet will be assessed by one of our specially trained veterinary technicians. You and your pet will be escorted to an exam room, where the technician will take your pet’s vital signs. If he or she determines your pet may be seriously ill, your pet will be taken directly to our treatment area to be seen immediately by one of our veterinarians.

Physical Exam

The doctor will perform a thorough physical exam on your dog or cat. He or she will then discuss what may be causing your pet to not feel well, and what we need to do to get your furry family member on the road to recovery.

Personalized Treatment Plan and Estimate

After your pet has had their physical exam, the doctor will return to the treatment area to put together an estimate for your pet’s individualized health care plan.

The technician will then return to the exam room, and go over each individual item on the estimate with you. Do not hesitate to ask questions about the necessity of tests, or medications. You are a valued member of your pet’s treatment team! If your pet is being admitted to the hospital, a deposit for a portion of the estimate will be taken at this time. If they do not need to stay with us, we will have you approve the treatment plan, and we will administer treatment immediately, and get you and your pet back to the comfort of your home as quickly as possible.

Admitted to the Hospital

After all your questions have been answered, and you have approved the treatment plan for your pet, treatment will begin. We understand this is one of the hardest times as a pet owner. If your pet has to stay with us, he or she will be taken to the treatment area, and you will probably return home.

Treatment and diagnostics will begin immediately on your pet after they are admitted.


In most cases, we have all of your pet’s results back within an hour or two. After we have all the results, the veterinarian will call you and discuss these findings with you. In some cases, the results of the tests will change the course of treatment we outlined with you. If this is the case, the veterinarian will discuss those changes with you at this time, and answer any questions you might have.

Hospitalization and Monitoring

During your pet’s stay with us, he or she will be closely monitored in our treatment room. He or she will have regularly scheduled medications, and in some cases, follow-up tests. We can see your pet at all times while they are with us, so we are constantly aware of any changes in his or her condition. If he or she gets cold, we have heated kennels available so your pet is comfortable. Blankets, pillows, and anything else your pet requires to be as comfortable as possible will be provided.

Updates on Your Pet’s Condition

We know when your furry family member is in the hospital, it is a very stressful time for you. It is hard for you to have them out of your home, and not knowing how they are doing. It is for this reason, we encourage you to call at any time to get an update on his or her condition, even if it is 3 am. This is what we are here for! If the veterinarian is available to speak with you, we will make sure you get to talk to him or her. If they are not available, you will receive an update from one of our highly qualified technicians, and we will have the veterinarian call you just as soon as he or she is available if you would like. You will also receive an update every morning from the veterinarian before he or she goes off shift.

Visiting Your Pet in the Hospital

We encourage you to visit your pet in the hospital once or twice a day. We ask that you call ahead of time, to make sure we will not have to make you wait. We also ask that you keep your visits to 15 minutes, so your pet can continue to receive treatment. In most cases, we will put you and your pet in an exam room to visit privately. If your pet is a dog, you can feel free to take them for a walk if they are able. You may be given food to try to encourage your pet to eat. Special circumstances may apply where we are not able to move your pet to a room to visit. If your pet is in our isolation unit, intensive care unit, or is either unable or it is too painful for him or her to be moved, are examples of why this might happen. If this is the case, we will allow a brief visit in our treatment area.

Discharge from the Hospital!!

In most cases, we will discharge your pet from the hospital when he or she is able to eat and drink. The ability to eat and drink is important, because it means they will be able to hold down oral medications. When the time comes for your loved one to leave the hospital, we will remove their intravenous catheter (if they had one), prepare any prescriptions, and write individualized take-home instructions for you and your pet. You will also be provided with a copy of all paperwork from your pet’s stay with us. A copy of this paperwork will also be faxed to your regular veterinarian so they can have it for your pet’s permanent medical record. Any unpaid balance on your bill needs to be paid at this time. We will go over ALL medications with you, any follow-up care your pet may require from your regular vet, and answer any last questions you may have. After all of this is complete, we will reunite you and your pet. This is the happiest time for us as staff at the hospital!
